Boston Dynamics: Meet Spot
By Chris Eburne · Module IT
Is it a dog? Is it a robot? Well, it is a bit of both!
Boston Dynamics released a launch video of their latest robot, Spot.
What is Spot?
The company's most notorious previous creation was a quad-legged robot capable of carrying 180kg and tackling challenging terrain, intended for use with the US military. It was ultimately discontinued for being too noisy.
Spot has a similar design to its predecessor but is smaller and sleeker. Key specifications:
- Speed of 3 miles per hour over rough terrain and stairs
- Can correct itself if it falls over
- 90-minute battery life with swappable batteries
- 14kg carry capacity
- Stereo cameras for obstacle avoidance
- Programmable API for custom integrations
What is Next?
The robot platform is intended as a base for other devices, including a robotic arm still in development at the time of launch.
Boston Dynamics continues to push the boundaries of what autonomous robotics can achieve. Whether in logistics, inspection, or emergency response, platforms like Spot represent a glimpse into the near future of AI-powered physical automation.
