Facebook's $5 Billion Fine
By Chris Eburne · Module IT
The FTC issued a $5 billion settlement fee to Facebook, resolving an ongoing investigation into how the company lost control over massive amounts of personal data and how it mishandled communications with end users.
The Scale of the Fine
The $5 billion fine is nearly 30 times the FTC's largest-ever civil penalty at the time, which was $168 million levied on Dish Network in 2017. The fine followed calls for technology companies to have better transparency and accountability.
Mark Zuckerberg said the company agreed to pay a historic fine and would make major structural changes to how it builds products and runs the company.

- Understand what personal data you collect and why
- Ensure you have lawful bases for processing
- Communicate clearly with users about how their data is used
- Have a process for handling data subject requests
