Windows 7 End Of Life
By Chris Eburne · Module IT
Windows 7 reached End Of Life (EOL) on the 14th January 2020. Mainstream support ended in 2015, with extended support running until that date. Windows 7 was released in late 2009, a solid ten-year run.
What End Of Life Means
After the EOL date, Microsoft no longer supplies security updates or technical assistance. They strongly advise anyone still running Windows 7 to upgrade immediately.
Upgrading to Windows 10
The free upgrade to Windows 10 ended in 2016. To upgrade now, you need to purchase a licence and check that your hardware meets the requirements. Older Windows 7 devices may technically run Windows 10 but the extra strain on older hardware can result in a noticeably reduced experience.
The Risk of Staying on Windows 7
If you continue to run Windows 7, your PC will still function but it will be unsecured against modern threats and will become increasingly incompatible with software that has continued to develop.
